Frequently Asked Questions

What to expect

Attending a psychologist for the first time can feel daunting.  Gemma utilises an empathetic, collaborative approach and strives to provide a non-judgmental, safe space for you to explore your thoughts, feelings and concerns.  She tailors sessions to each individual, taking into account your personal preferences in order to help you achieve your therapeutic goals.

First Session

At the first session, Gemma will obtain your consent and discuss confidentiality with you. You will have the opportunity to discuss your reasons for attending and you can let Gemma know what you would like to get out of your sessions.  Gemma may collect some additional information about your life and background.  Based on your concerns and therapeutic goals, Gemma can tailor a treatment plan for your individual situation and continue to see you on an ongoing basis in order to achieve your desired outcome.

Confidentiality

All information provided in session is kept confidential according to privacy legislation. There are some limits to confidentiality where information provided might be disclosed to others, such as the following:

  • You are at serious risk of harm to yourself, harm to another person/s, or in the case of children and adolescents, if you are at serious risk of harm from another person.
  • If Gemma or her case notes are subpoenaed in relation to court orders or proceedings.
  • If you provide consent for Gemma to discuss your care with another person, such as a GP, psychiatrist, partner, or parent.

Information you provide with any contact to this service, such as by phone and email, is also bound by the limits of confidentiality described above.
